 Fire Safety Signs

Fire safety signs are an absolutely integral part of fire safety equipment, since visual instructions on what you should do in case of a fire are a must. UK law states that fire safety information must be accessible to all staff in a workplace, and everyone should be aware of the locations of fire equipment and exits. These requirements can be found in The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

There are clear requirements when it comes to the appearance and location of your fire safety signs, according to the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996:

• Fire safety signs must be unambiguous
• Escape routes must be distinctly labelled
• These routes must be labelled throughout
• Fire exit signs must be lit, in order for them to be seen in a power outage
• The last fire exit sign in a route should not have arrows
• Any signs that do have arrows should be pointed to the nearest fire exit
• Do not mix different standards of signs (e.g. don’t mix European standard signs with UK standard signs)
• Signs should make use of pictures, with any text being secondary
• Signs should be 2m from the floor in order to be seen from far away
• All fire equipment needs to have relevant signs
